456 – Will Non Distilling Producers Survive 2024? And A Message From Barrell Bourbon on Bourbon Community Roundtable #92

The past few weeks there have been lots of speculation about non distilling producers, or known as NDPs, being able to survive. The market has shifted and there are images of sourced brands that have prices slashed on shelves along with others having their facilities up for sale. This makes us wonder what is in store for the remainder of the year. We talk about what makes NDPs special and how every big distillery was also a NDP at one point as well. There’s also a message coming directly from Barrell Bourbon about their current listings.

  1. Just finished the episode and I really think the reaction to the Barrell announcements is too alarmist. I am a NYC retailer that does tons of picks a year. I think what Joe and Barrell are doing is exactly what a small/medium sized brand needs to do to reposition for the next phase of the market. I believe the whiskey market is softening in NY and country-wide, and if you’re seeing the same thing then it makes perfect sense for a brand like Barrell to trim costs as soon as possible. That then allows the brand to redirect investment to wherever the market indicates.

That said, while I love to support NDPs, I probably won’t give more than one or two shelf spots per brand. I won’t be giving multiple shelf spots to line extensions from the big six either.
